“The subject matter of theology is God, humanity, and creation, and the vortex in which these three existentially entangle is liturgy.”

~David W. Fagerberg

Catholics attend Mass often enough that it becomes mundane or ordinary. But there is a great mystery or secret at the heart of the Mass. It is, for one, a ritual sacrifice. It takes place around a stone altar. There is talk of “eating flesh and drinking blood.” In the New Testament, Saint Paul wrote about “the mystery which was kept secret for long ages,” a mystery which is now “disclosed” (Rom 16:25). It is just this mystery which hides behind the Mass.

This newsletter explores the mystery of the Mass and tries to make it more accessible, not just when there’s talk of eating flesh and drinking blood, but also with the mundane. Holy water, incense? Perhaps they, too, “disclose… the mystery which was kept secret for long ages.”
